Background: I am a second year Geography student at the University of Nottingham particularly passionate about climate change and sustainable development. I have therefore taken modules in environmental dynamics and change and am excited to study climate change in more depth in my final year of undergraduate study.
I am especially interested in the sustainability of our food systems and how these are threatened by climate change (as well as other factors including population growth), so my dissertation is exploring how vertical farming, a form of urban agriculture, may be a solution to our rising food insecurity. Using the technique of vertical farming, I am part of a social enterprise that aims to tackle nutrient malnutrition amongst school children in Uganda (which is predicted to rise as a result of climate change) through the provision of microgreens.
Moreover, last year I was part of a student consultancy group (180 Degrees Consulting) and helped develop a programme for a start up social enterprise in Nottingham to teach children about climate change, sustainable living, and healthy eating. Finally, I have recently completed a course with Harvard University on the ‘Health Effects of Climate Change’ because given the current pandemic, I wanted to learn more about how infectious diseases may be impacted by climate change.
Why You Would Like to Join The Scheme / What You Hope To Get Out Of The Scheme: I am passionate about climate change and particularly the effects it is having/ will have on the UN’s Sustainable Development goals, so I wish to go beyond my degree programme to learn more about these issues. I would love to hear different people’s thoughts on climate change-related topics to expand and potentially challenge my own knowledge and opinions because I have mainly only ever discussed such topics within my university bubble. I am also looking to do a masters in Environmental Leadership and Management then enter a career in environmental consulting, so this would be a great opportunity for me to network and learn from those working in this industry!
