Government Action for Environmental Migrants and Climate Refugees
We are want the UK government to support legislation and policy for environmental migrants and climate refugees.
Globally, there is no officially recognised definition and/or legal protection for climate refugees. This is a global problem and the UK is no exception. We want the UK government to develop and deliver climate-policy for the protection of environmental migrants and climate refugees.
According to the UN Human Rights Council, there are currently more than 71 million forcibly displaced people globally. But, despite growing levels of forcible displacement and environmental migration, climate refugees do not receive any legal protection.
This is not a 'faraway' problem and we will increasingly see displacement both within the UK and displacement to the UK. Did you know that in 2019, the "UK's first climate refugees" learnt that their village in North Wales is to be decommissioned by 2054 due to the devastating effects of coastal erosion and sea level rise?
We believe that climate change is a human rights issue and the UK government must recognise this to achieve equitable futures for all. We hope you do too.
